FALMOUTH, THE JANUS SERIES, 2022
Returning to Falmouth nearly a decade after my Art Foundation years, was a homecoming in many ways.
Being in this formative place once more was a naturally introspective experience, made even more symbolic with the cross over of January, a month which takes its namesake from Janus: the two faced God of reflection and foresight. It was an apt time and space to look back on the year of 2021, a substantial and transformative time which saw a radical shift in my creative practice and personal emancipation from loss to love. The ritual of reflection is powerful, if not necessary, in its ability to help us process change: to look forward is to call in and to look back is to let go.
This Janus series catalogues poignant months in 2021 using ink on cartridge and painted frames. Some repeat motifs and even artworks made in that year, to mark their significance. The patterns that embellish the frames are imitations of the work within, creating fluidity and connection between the outer and inner. For me this is inspired by a curiosity to make something more sculptural and ‘whole’ out of works on paper, of course taking influence from Howard Hodgkin. I have wanted to play with this idea for some time which the restful stillness of Falmouth allowed.
