As the National Gallery celebrates 200 years, this exhibition invites artists to reflect on the essence of identity in its many forms. Whether through portraiture, abstract expressions, or conceptual explorations, artists are encouraged to interpret the enduring question: What makes us who we are?
From vivid depictions of individuals to the intangible forces that shape collective memory, this theme celebrates the diversity of approaches to representing identity, offering a space for both the personal and universal.
a room of her own
Upsilon Gallery, Broadbent House, 64 Grosvenor St, London W1K 3JH from the 20th November - 2nd February 2025
A group exhibition featuring works on paper and ceramics by emerging and mid-career women artists, including Francine Tint, Xinyan Zhang, Diane Chappalley, Leila Bartell, Cathy Tabbakh, Natacha Ivanova, Evie Mae Jacobs, Ruby Bateman, Nina Khemchyan, K Blick, Hannah Lim and Laura Grinberga. The exhibition will run from November 20th to January 18th. A Room of Her Own takes inspiration from Virginia Woolf's 1929 essay A Room of One’s Own, which powerfully asserts the need for women to have space—both physical and creative—to nurture their artistic expression. Echoing Woolf’s concept, this exhibition honours that space of one’s mind and freedom, emphasising the nature of drawings and ceramics as media that allow for immediacy, delicacy, and an unfiltered emotional resonance.

Ruby’s paintings are in conversation with Blue’s ceramics, exploring dualism; the ‘me-state’ identity complex and its (dis)association with nature. Supporting Ruby’s visual works is a piece of poetry she has written, heavily inspired by the artist and poet William Blake, where she has created a story about the shedding of one’s ego in a journey through Wistman’s Wood.
To celebrate this exhibition, The Chapel on the Green are launching their first supper club, called ‘The Laughing Moon’. Thursday 20th June at 6pm.
